Who We Are
Beacon of Hope Initiative (BHI) started on July 1, 2001 in Jos, Nigeria through the Christian Reformed World Missions (CRWM) and World Renew, both agencies of the Christian Reformed Church of North America. BHI became registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria as a corporate body on October 7, 2010. BHI is one of the current partners of World Renew. Beacon of Hope Initiative is a faith-based community development organization. Together with World Renew, Beacon of Hope Initiative empowers individuals and communities and enhances program management, organizational growth, adherence to core humanitarian standards, and leadership development from a Christian perspective. World Renew was a sub-recipient of the Food for the Hungry USAID award among which Nigeria benefitted. World Renew Nigeria served as the lead agency for the ABY project in Nigeria which had Beacon of Hope Initiative, Operation Blessing, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, and Salvation Army as implementing partners. This project was aimed at responding to HIV and AIDS and was titled Abstinence, Being faithful for Youth (ABY) and was carried out from January 2005 to September 2010. BHI and World Renew also implemented two rounds of Embrace AIDS grants in Nigeria from 2008 to 2011. BHI has also successfully implemented a Global Affairs Canada “Protecting Adolescent Health and Rights” program covering Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Plateau, and Taraba States as well as “Community Transformation through Youth Economic Empowerment in Nigeria” funded by the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation (MCIC) Canada. Beacon of Hope Initiative has also successfully implemented programs on orphans and vulnerable children, HIV testing and counseling, economic empowerment for PLWHA, health education on general health issues such as malaria control, environmental sanitation, nutrition using grants from Oikonomos Foundation in the Netherlands and the Embraced AIDS of World Renew.
BHI is currently implementing a Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) program which is in its eighth year sponsored by Baker Foundation through World Renew. The program was implemented in Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau States and currently in Bauchi State. BHI continues to implement youth economic empowerment, widows and orphans support, leadership development and trauma healing projects funded by government institutions, foundations and World Renew. BHI operational and programming strategies prioritize social 2 justice issues mainly, community economic empowerment, gender transformation, and environmental sustainability. As a local affiliate of the Fellowship of Churches of Christ in Nigeria (a membership organization currently made up of 15 national church denominations, commonly referred to as TEKAN), BHI has a far reached and established reputation as it fulfils its mandate of carrying out integrated community-based development. BHI’s programs are enriched as they are inclusive of all people of different ethnicity, religions, genders, and abilities. Beacon of Hope Initiative is very well accepted and respected in selected communities and has good track record in delivering good results.
